Tiger Run

LSU Health New Orleans Tiger Run 2018, a 5k race and 1-mile fun run/walk organized by students at LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine, is Sunday, November 18, 2018, at the Magazine Street entrance to Audubon Park near Shelter #10. LSU Health New Orleans Student-Run Homeless Clinics are among the oldest in the country. LSU Health New Orleans medical students have treated patients at homeless shelters under faculty supervision for nearly 30 years. Through their clinics at the New Orleans Mission and Ozanam Inn, each week LSU Health New Orleans medical students and faculty contribute full primary care medical services including medications from their on-site pharmacy. The students also perform TB testing, HIV/HepC testing, and offer flu shots. The LSU Health clinic at Ozanam Inn also provides dental services such as oral cancer screenings, dental exams, and tooth extractions. LSU Health School of Dentistry students and faculty staff the dental clinic. Both clinics operate every Saturday during the semester and rely heavily rely upon the support of our LSU Health medical faculty and residents to volunteer as physicians for clinics.

Begun in 1991 to provide a foundation of quality health care to the under-served and disadvantaged of the New Orleans community, the clinics have taken care of 161 patients since the start of the fall semester this year and thousands over the years. Many of these patients would not have received health care otherwise.

The race is open to the general public. All runners, walkers, and those who like good fun for a good cause are welcome. That includes families, children and dogs. Online pre-registration is $20 for LSU Health New Orleans students and $25 for non-students. Team registration is $20 per person on the team. For children 12 and under, registration is $15. Although registration continues through race day, the last day to be guaranteed a t-shirt or to become a sponsor and have your logo included on the t-shirt is November 1, 2018. On race day, registration is $25.

The entry fee also includes a post-race party with food, fun, and music. The medical students will be checking blood pressure and blood sugar levels at a mini health fair. There will be a Kids’ Area with activities and crafts. Participants can also donate through a 50/50 raffle where the winner takes home 50% of the pot.
